Maintenant que les politiciens néerlandais se mettent également à s’opposer à ce phénomène et à vouloir rendre ces pratiques punissables, cette affaire ne restera pas sans suite…

C’est une aubaine pour la famille Knol, qui réside à Dordrecht et qui détient depuis plusieurs années le domaine knol.com en tant que carte de visite pour son entreprise de vente d’aspirateurs et de nettoyeurs à vapeur.

D’après un article publié dans AD, Google aurait déjà fait une offre pour la reprise du nom de domaine dont le « montant comporte cinq zéros ». Le patron de l’entreprise n’a pas accepté cette offre, car d’après lui, elle ne serait pas assez intéressante ; le fisc néerlandais raflerait en effet 52 % de cette somme. L’homme estime qu’une offre ne serait intéressante que si un montant à 6 zéros était en jeu.
Entre-temps, l’entreprise profite de toute l’attention médiatique qu’elle reçoit – même le très influent magazine américain Forbes a approché l’entreprise Knol. Et cela fait naturellement beaucoup de publicité à l’entreprise…

And that’s a very good thing for the Knol family (from Dordrecht), which has owned the domain knol.com for years as a business card for their company that sells vacuum cleaners and steam cleaners.

According to an article published in AD, Google already made a “six-figure offer” for the domain name. The company manager refused the offer because it isn’t interesting enough – apparently, Dutch tax authorities would retain 52 % of this sum. Things would only get interesting with a seven-figure sum on the table.

Meanwhile, the company is enjoying all the media attention that it can get. Even the influential American magazine Forbes has approached the Knol company. And that, of course, rhymes with excellent publicity for this Dutch business…

COMBELL onderzocht dit fenomeen van typosquatting al uitvoerig eind mei en biedt een gratis tool om te kijken welke domeinnamen er nog beschikbaar zijn: de typo generator. Nu ook de Nederlandse politiekers dit fenomeen aan de kaak stellen en de praktijken ook strafbaar willen maken wordt dit ongetwijfeld nog vervolgd.

En dat is dan leuk meegenomen voor de familie Knol uit Dordrecht, die al jarenlang het domein knol.com in handen heeft als visitekaartje voor haar bedrijf dat stofzuigers en stoomreinigers verkoopt.

Google zou, aldus een artikel in AD, al een overnamebod gedaan hebben voor de domeinnaam in ruil voor een ‘bedrag met vijf nullen’. De bedrijfsleider is daar niet op ingegaan, omdat dit bod niet interessant genoeg is - de Nederlandse fiscus zou immers 52% van deze som afromen. Pas interessant wordt het als er een bedrag met 6 nullen op tafel komt.

Ondertussen geniet het bedrijf van alle media-aandacht die het krijgt - zelfs het gezaghebbende Amerikaanse magazine Forbes heeft het bedrijf Knol benaderd. En dat is natuurlijk goede reclame voor het bedrijf…
